Kalani was unfazed with a familiar situation.
The Falcons’ shooters were relatively calm in Wednesday’s penalty kick shootout and goalkeeper Heather Mar made two big saves to help Kalani beat Honokaa 2-1 in the first round of the Outrigger Resorts/HHSAA Division II Girls Soccer State Championships.
The game was tied 1-1 after regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods before Kalani outscored Honokaa 4-3 in penalty kicks.
The Falcons (5-6-2) advanced to face second-seeded Mid-Pacific (5-5-2) in Thursday’s 7 p.m. quarterfinal at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
“Most of us were pretty calm about it,” said Kalani senior Tori Chinen, who pointed out her team beat Nanakuli in penalty kicks during the OIA semifinals three weeks ago. OIA teams do not go to overtime periods and shootouts in the regular season.
Rovi Porter, the Falcons’ seventh shooter, found the back of the net at Waipio to seal the win. Shyla Nishikawa, Gienah Southichack and Alyssa Nishi also converted their penalty kicks.
“We practice it a lot,” said Chinen. “She (Mar) has a good eye for PKs.”
Tia Agdeppa, Mia Nakachi and Hia Kapu converted their penalty kicks for Honokaa (4-9) and it was tied 3-3 after the first five required rounds.
Mar then stopped shots from Kahea Muraki and Nina Cardoza before Porter’s shot ended the game.
“You just got to relax and go through it,” Mar said. “You just got to react and then you notice (by) reading and how they’re going to kick the ball.”
Chinen’s playing status was questionable after she sprained her ACL in the OIA championship game on Jan. 31. Wearing a brace on her right leg, Chinen entered the game early in the second half.
In the 62nd minute, she got the ball in the middle of the box and passed it back out to Nicole Nakamura, who scored from about 20 yards out to tie the game at 1-1.
“He (coach Myles Arakawa) said he would try to get me in as much as he can considering it’s my senior year and I did sprain my ACL,” said Chinen, who took several shots and missed just wide in the first overtime. “I just wanted to go in badly and coach Myles let me.”
Nina Cardoza collected a ball in front of the goal and shot it into the top right corner to give Honokaa a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Kapu had a shot that just missed in the first overtime.
“I thought they hung tight,” said Honokaa coach Gerald Shiraki. “For a moment, it went back and forth and I thought Kalani grabbed the momentum for a while. The second half, I thought we started off pretty well. It was pretty evenly played.”
