Kevin Weissheier got Jonathan Weeks to ground into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded and Hofstra held on to beat Hawaii 3-2 on Wednesday night in the first of a five-game series at Les Murakami Stadium.
Alec Eisenberg (1-0) didn’t give up a hit until the sixth inning to earn the win for the Pride (1-3), who were swept to start the season at UCLA by a combined score of 43-10.
Andrew Jones (0-2) worked five innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits with two walks and a career-high six strikeouts as UH (1-4) lost by a 3-2 margin for the third time in five games this season.
Hawaii finished with five total hits in the game.
UH trailed 3-0 in the eighth but manufactured two runs after one-out singles by Stephen Ventimilia and Jacob Sheldon-Collins.
UH loaded the bases in the ninth with nobody out in the ninth. Eric Ramirez singled to right and Jordan Richartz reached base on a sacrifice bunt that was dropped by Ryan Donovan at first. Alan Baldwin reached on a bunt single to loaded the bases, but catcher Chayce Ka’aua struck out looking on three pitches before Weeks’ grounder to second.
