Nothing ever comes easy for Punahou’s Joshua Crimmins.
The Punahou wrestler was awarded the top seed for the Chevron/HHSAA state wrestling championships at 138 pounds, but might have the toughest draw in the bracket.
Mililani’s Zachary Diamond was supposed to be the top seed until the OIA championships on Saturday, when he lost in the semifinals and forfeited his next two bouts with a knee injury. That left him as the OIA’s sixth-best wrestler and open to be slotted anywhere it is convenient, which turned out to be No. 16. John Robinson, Diamond’s coach, says he will be ready to wrestle.
Punahou also got a top seed for reigning state champion Cameron Kato at 113, while Kapolei and Kamehameha also had multiple top dogs. Campbell has the most top seeds with three: Joshua Roy Gallarde (132), James Sullivan (220) and returning state champ Tristan Ludiazo (285).
Boman Tokioka of Kamehameha received the top seed at 195 pounds as a reigning state champion, but Kaiser’s Chance Ikei will have to come from the middle of the pack at 132 to defend his state title. He was unseeded when he won it last year as well, one of only three unseeded boys to take the title since 2010.
Lahainaluna’s girls received six of the 14 top seeds at Sunday’s seeding meeting at ‘Iolani, easily the most for that gender. Iverly Navarro (102), Alexis Encinas (107), Diamond Freitas (112), Breanna Dudoit-Vasquez (138), Carly Jaramillo (145) and Lalelei Mataafa (220) all go into the tournament as favorites for the Lunas, with two other girls wrestling from seeded positions.
Lahainaluna has finished in the top four — and runner-up twice — at states in each of the past four years. They have two girls, Mataafa and Jaramillo, going for their third state titles and Dudoit-Vasquez going for her second.
Kamehameha’s Teshya Alo will be going for her third crown as the top seed at 132 and her sister, Teniya, will be going for her first as the top seed at 122 for ‘Iolani. Campbell’s Kalissa Pundyke won as an unseeded wrestler last year and will have to do so again at 102.
The first round of the tournament begins at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Blaisdell Arena and continues through the championship round at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
