Vulcans sweep softball doubleheader
Hawaii Hilo defeated Chaminade 1-0 and 8-6 on Sunday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Vanessa Salinas hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to win the opener while also throwing a complete-game six-hitter.
Danielle Wilson hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to break a 6-all tie.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 10-6 overall, 5-1 in the Pacific West Conference, while Chaminade dropped to 2-10, 1-3.
Vulcans split hoops doubleheader
Kirstie Williams scored 18 points as the Hawaii Hilo women’s basketball team ended its season with an 80-71 win over Dominican University on Saturday in Hilo.
The Vulcans finished 10-14 overall, 9-11 in the Pacific West Conference.
»Joey Rodriguez scored 21 of his team-high 27 points in the first half, but it wasn’t enough as Dominican University defeated the Vulcans 88-82 in the men’s contest. Darnell Williams added 15 points for Hawaii Hilo (12-14, 8-12 Pacific West Conference) in its season finale.
Silverswords hoopsters win
Lee Bailey poured in a season-high 27 points as Chaminade’s men’s basketball team held off Academy of Art 90-78 on Saturday night. The Swords (12-14, 9-11) knocked down 15 3-pointers in the victory on senior night.
UHH baseball splits doubleheader
Holy Names and Hawaii split a doubleheader on Saturday in Hilo, with the Hawks winning game one 10-3 and the Vulcans taking game two 5-2.
Byron Freitas and Phillip Steering had two hits apiece in the first game, but a five-run sixth inning helped the visitors win.
Game two featured Eric Vega getting the victory on the mound by scattering 10 hits over 51⁄3 innings. Michael Slifer pitched 12⁄3 innings of relief for the save. Hawaii Hilo improved to 4-5 overall, 2-2 Pacific West Conference. Holy Names is 10-6, 2-2.
