Brent Grant overcame a slow-motion final round and a seven-hole playoff to win the weather-beaten Army Invitational last weekend at Leilehua.
The tournament, scheduled for 54 holes starting Thursday, did not tee off Friday because of the weather. The field was scheduled to play the final 36 holes Saturday, but slow play convinced officials to cut it to 18 holes that day and cut it to a 36-hole tournament.
Grant had rounds of 70-68 to catch first-round leader Dalen Yamauchi (66-72), then held Yamauchi off in the playoff. Brian Lee (70), Corey Kozuma (69) and John Oda (65) tied for third a shot back. Mike Kawate closed with a 71 to capture the senior championship at 151. Brant Nishimura (78–150) won A flight, Edwin Mariano (83–160) B flight and Jared Yamamoto (89–171) and Ernest Barrett (84–171) C flight.
OCC Invitational tees off
The 51st annual Oahu Country Club Invitational tees off Thursday, with 46 players in the open division and 44 more in the seniors (55-older).
Two-time champion Matthew Ma is in the field. Other former champions at OCC include Jonathan Ota, Merv Matsumoto, Brandan Kop and Wendell Kop.
This year’s Manoa Cup champ, Nainoa Calip, is also playing, as are Corey Kozuma, John Oda and Kyle Suppa, who was second to Jared Sawada last year. Golfers start at 6:45 a.m. Thursday and Friday and 11 a.m. for Saturday’s final round.
Fan, Furuichi get second
Hawaii’s Brittany Fan and Hana Furuichi shared second in the individual race at last week’s Mary Cave Cup, in El Cajon, Calif. Fan shot rounds of 77-72 and Furuichi 75-74 to finish nine back of medalist Alice Jeong from California.
The Hawaii 1 team of Furuichi and Lisa Kang tied for third in the team competition after shooting 72-68 — five strokes out of first. Fan and Marissa Uridomo, the Hawaii 2 team, took sixth at 73-69.
In the 46th Eddie Hogan Cup at Riverside Golf and Country Club in Portland, Ore., Hawaii’s Justin Williamson tied for 11th and the Hawaii team took eighth.
Hawaii shot 233-226 and was 28 shots behind champion northern California. Williamson (74–149) was eight shots out of first, followed by Tyler Munetake (76–154), Zackary Kaneshiro (76–164) and Justin Ngan (86–166).
