Rainbow Wahine 14th at MPSF meet
The University of Hawaii women’s track and field team completed the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships in Seattle on Saturday with another school record, three more personal bests and a 14th-place finish.
During the two-day competition at the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor, the Rainbow Wahine totaled two school records and nine personal bests.
One day after posting a personal best in the weight throw, junior Alex Porlier Langlois captured the bronze medal in the shot put with another PR and school record 52-7¼. The mark eclipsed the previous record of 52-6½ set by Meghan Weaver in 2008.
Sophomore Rachel Toliver posted a PR in her third event at the championships with a leap of 39-11¼ to place seventh in the triple jump.
Freshman Montana Martinez also had a PR in the 3,000 meters, clocking in at 9:56.60, the sixth-best time in school history and fastest mark by a Rainbow Wahine in seven years.
Senior Zhane Santiago was disqualified in her 60-meter hurdles final event Saturday. Sophomore Kayla Philips tied for 26th in the triple jump (36-6¾) and sophomore Sabrina Mendoza placed 21st in the shot put (41-7¼).
QB Club welcomes sports anchor Carpenter
Mark Carpenter, Hawaii News Now sports anchor, will be the guest speaker at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Maple Garden Restaurant.
The Kamehameha Schools and Hawaii Pacific University product will discuss his love of sports and the path he took from intern to anchor.
The Maple Garden Restaurant is at 909 Isenberg St. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon. The cost is $15 per person for members and guests.
Rothman crowned big wave champion
With a first-place and a runner-up finish in two events, Hawaii’s Makuakai Rothman, a wild-card competitor, was named champion Saturday of the 2014/2015 World Surf League Big Wave Tour.
Rothman finished with 20,833 points, almost 7,000 points ahead of tour runner-up Gabriel Villaran of Peru.
Rothman won the opening event in June, excelling in waves with 40-foot faces at the Billabong Pico Alto in Peru. In December, the Hawaii surfer took second in the Punta Galea Challenge in the Basque Country, Spain, behind winner Nic Lamb of Santa Cruz, Calif.
Late free throw lifts Hawaii Pacific men
Luke Hager scored 15 points and Darry Jones Jr. added 13 as the Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team edged Holy Names 68-67 on Saturday at Moanalua High School gym.
Justin Long’s free throw put the Sharks (16-10, 11-9 PacWest) ahead 68-64 with 26 seconds left. Nick Simi of the Hawks (3-25, 1-19) made a 3-pointer with one second left for the final margin.
Huerta and Navarro carry HPU women
Kylie Huerta had 22 points and 10 assists and Veanne Navarro also scored 22 points as the Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team beat Holy Names 96-45 on Saturday at Moanalua High School gym. Morganne Comstock had 13 points and 15 rebounds for the Sharks, who improved to 23-4 overall and 18-2 in the PacWest. The Hawks dropped to 2-26, 1-19.
» Lilia Malo finished with 15 points and Katie Buskey added 14 points and 12 rebounds, but Chaminade lost 69-59 to Academy of Arts at McCabe Gym. The Silverswords ended the season 7-17, 7-13.
Hawaii Pacific sweeps doubleheader
Hawaii Pacific scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Fresno Pacific 5-4 in the opener of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park.
HPU also won the nightcap, 3-2, when Tre’ Haliburton-Goeas scored on a wild pitch for what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
With two outs in the ninth in the first game, Nolan Barraza was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on Chad Bolibol’s single to right-center, and scored the winning run on a single to left-center by Codey Ellenwood.
Hawaii Pacific improved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the PacWest. Fresno Pacific fell to 9-6, 0-4.
» Hawaii Hilo split a doubleheader with Holy Names on Saturday at Wong Stadium, winning the opener 9-5, but dropping the nightcap 8-2.
The Vulcans (3-4, 1-1) banged out 16 hits in the first game, with Edison Sakata and Korin Medeiros collecting three hits each.
Hawaii Hilo managed just eight hits against the Hawks (9-5, 1-1) in the second game, with Medeiros and BJ Freitas picking up a pair each.
