Firefighters to resume search for missing hiker
Honolulu firefighters suspended their search for a 17-year-old Big Island hiker who went missing while apparently attempting to climb the Haiku Stairs on Friday.
Hawaii News Now identified the hiker as Daylen Pua.
Fire Inspector Kendall Ching said 17 firefighters were dispatched at about 6 a.m. Saturday to search the stairs, also known as the Stairway to Heaven.
Ching said the teen was last heard from on social media at about 3:30 p.m. Friday and indicated he was on the stairs, which have been closed for almost 30 years.
A fire helicopter dropped five firefighters at the top of the trail, and firefighters also searched the bottom part of the trail in Kaneohe, Ching said.
Thick cloud cover and rainy conditions prompted fire officials to suspend the search in the mid-afternoon.
