Kahala drowning victim identified as California man
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office identified Tuesday one of two men in an apparent double drowning off Kahala Beach as Steve Tran, 31, of Santa Ana, Calif.
The second man has not been identified. The medical examiner’s office is awaiting further studies before releasing a cause of death for both men, the office said.
Police said two men, ages 31 and 32, became unresponsive while swimming at a local beach about 6 p.m. Saturday.
Lifeguards reached the men, who were wearing fins, about 500 yards offshore near Hunakai Street, a Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman said. The lifeguards performed CPR on the men, and paramedics took them to the hospital in critical condition.
Police said the men died at the hospital.
A third man was able to make it to shore safely with the help of a surfer.
