Apparent drowning reported at Boiling Pots in Hilo

A swimmer from Puna apparently drowned on Thursday at Boiling Pots in Wailuku River State Park.

Hawaii County fire department peersonnel were called for help at 5:13 p.m. and found a man submerged in water and unresponsive. Attemps to revive him were unsuccessful.

Officials said witnesses saw the man, 33, struggling after swimming in an area under a waterfall. 

He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was officially pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of family. 

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
