Ian Kahaloa’s pitching is what brings major league scouts in droves, but it was his hitting that electrified the home fans in Campbell’s 12-4 comeback win over Waipahu on Wednesday.
Kahaloa went 4-for-4, including two booming doubles, with four RBIs as the Sabers improved to 2-0 in OIA West baseball.
After spotting the Marauders (2-1) four runs in the third inning, Campbell — the second ranked team in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 — scored 12 unanswered runs to knock the wind out of the visitors to overcast Ewa Beach.
Leadoff batter Dewayne Sprinkel played a huge role in Campbell’s offensive output, too, with three bunt hits in his first three at-bats.
"In (Sprinkel’s) first at-bat, their infielders gave him a lot of room and he went for it and took what they gave him," Sabers coach Rory Pico said. "On the next two, there were guys on base, so the hits were a plus but his first job was to at least sacrifice them over."
Waipahu, which only had two hits against three Sabers pitchers, took advantage of two hit batters and two walks to score its four runs in the third. Rustin Ho’s three-run triple to right off Campbell starter Mark Ramos was the big blow.
But the Marauders’ big lead didn’t sit well with the veteran Campbell players, who advanced to the state semifinals the last two seasons.
"Coach always tells us that the team that executes is the team that will come out on top," Sprinkel said. "We had confidence we could rally back and could put pressure on Waipahu."
Kahaloa’s run-scoring double and Darrien Hermosura’s RBI single along with a Marauders error keyed the Sabers’ four-run bottom of the fourth that deadlocked the score at 4-all.
"He (Kahaloa) was one of our best preseason hitters, coming through in the clutch and driving in runs," Pico said. "He’s swinging the bat well."
With a sharp single to left field in the fourth, Kahaloa drove in the go-ahead runs for a 6-4 lead. In the Sabers’ five-run sixth, he added a run-scoring double to deep left. The senior, who is the Sabers’ cleanup hitter and ace pitcher, struck out 13 batters in the team’s season-opening win over Waianae last Wednesday.
"It was the snowball effect," Marauders coach Jared Abreu said. "One error leads to another (Waipahu made four on the day). Campbell hit the ball and put it in play and they have speed. We took too many strikes. After the game, we talked about minimizing errors and not giving up, especially against a good team like Campbell. They are possibly the best team in the state. The stage was pretty big for our players today."
Ho, a center fielder for the Marauders, felt some of the Waipahu players got dejected toward the end of the game, when the result was no longer in doubt.
"It was a big game," Ho said. "It didn’t fall in our favor. We need to limit our errors. Some of us got down when things started to go downhill and we can’t do that. We just gotta let it go."
Campbell pitcher Chad Samante, in relief of Ramos, earned the win and didn’t allow a run on one hit in 1 1/3 innings. Hermosura was effective in the final three innings on the hill, giving up just one hit and striking out six.
Of the six runs given up by Marauders starter and loser Jaron Sugimoto, two were unearned.
