Florence takes third at Billabong Pro Tahiti

Hawaii’s John John Florence finished in a tie for third place at the Billabong Pro Tahiti on Monday.

Florence and Kelly Slater each finished with a score of 19.77, but Slater advanced to the final based on the highest single-wave score tiebreaker.

Earlier in the day, Florence advanced out of the fourth and quarterfinal rounds before falling in the semifinal.

Vulcans lose tennis coach

Karl Sloss resigned as the tennis coach at UH-Hilo on Monday.

Sloss, who took over the program in November 2012, stepped down to pursue his certification as a registered dietitian.
