Bright-red gowns were well represented at the Emmy Awards Monday night, seen on Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Christina Hendricks, January Jones, Octavia Spencer, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver, Uzo Aduba and Kaley Cuoco, among many. But other colors were also part of the mix.

Allison Janney, who won best supporting actress in a comedy for her "Mom" role, looked anything but: Her velvet magenta gown seriously hugged her in all the right places. "I love this dress because it makes me look like I have the tiniest waist. I put this on and everyone was like, ‘Done!’"

Sofia Vergara, always a red-carpet stunner, went for a classic look in a fitted white Roberto Cavalli gown with a Space-Agey bodice that showed less of her cleavage than usual.

Kerry Washington chose a fitted bright orange Prada with beaded front pleats, a high slit and dark sparkle peeking out from underneath. "I saw it hanging there and I knew it was a contender," she said. "I threw it on during a lunch break when I was shooting ‘Scandal’ and fell in love."

Christina Hendricks wore a gaudy, one-shoulder Marchesa with yards and yards of draping fabric, loud floral embroidery at the waist and a plunging neckline.

Hayden Panettiere (who announced it’s a girl) lovingly stroked her baby bump in a metallic fitted gown.

Uzo Aduba has been having big fun in fashion since the Netflix show "Orange Is the New Black" has grown popular. Earlier this month, she won a Creative Arts Emmy for her role as Crazy Eyes.

"I wanted something beautiful," she said of her custom Christian Siriano.

‘He made us laugh big time’

Billy Crystal honored his "greatest friend," Robin Williams, in a poignant tribute that was a highlight of the awards show. Crystal, silent since the death of Williams two weeks ago at age 63, managed to be upbeat, but the emotion was just below the surface.

"He made us laugh big time," Crystal said. "I spent many happy hours with Robin on stage. I kept thinking if I could put a saddle on him and stay on for eight seconds I was going to be OK."

Crystal told the rapt audience, "For almost 40 years, he was the brightest star in the comedy galaxy."

‘Detective’ co-stars trade jabs

Woody Harrelson and his "True Detective" co-star Matthew McConaughey were given time to banter before announcing that Benedict Cumberbatch of "Sherlock: His Last Vow" was the winner of the best miniseries actor award.

"So you won Oscar, (People magazine’s) Sexiest Man Alive and now you want an Emmy, too. Isn’t that a little bit greedy?" Harrelson teased his fellow nominee.

McConaughey responded, "I think you should have gratitude for what you have and not envy what I do."

Worst dressed: Many choices

Overall, the Emmys red carpet was one of the best in recent Hollywood history when it came to fashion. But there were exceptions.

Here are the evening’s worst dressed:

» Lena Dunham in Giambattista Valli. Though Dunham deserves applause for her frothy, feminine turn in a tiered, cotton-candy like skirt and tailored top, she looked downright uncomfortable, which was wrinkling and wilting in the hot afternoon sun.

» Julia Roberts in Elie Saab. The pearl and stone embroidery on this midnight blue, plunging dress was striking, but it was a lot of heavy detail for such a short dress.

» Kristen Wiig in a white silk charmeuse Vera Wang gown, ill-fitting at the top. Her expression did nothing to help; she seemed like she would rather be anywhere but at the Emmys.

» Kate Mara in J Mendel. This white gown had lace, panels and embroidery in so many unlikely places.

» Amy Poehler in Theia. This spangled silver sequin number wasn’t special looking or particularly flattering.

» Sarah Paulson in Giorgio Armani. The overlapping dotte tulle encircling the dress brought to mind a mosquito net.

Emmy host gets in dig at Emmy

Noting that the Emmys moved to Monday night to avoid a conflict with Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, Emmy host Seth Meyers said that MTV doesn’t really specialize in videos anymore.

"That’s like network TV holding an awards show and giving all the trophies to cable and Netflix. That would be crazy," Meyers joked.

At the end of the show, the host walked off stage and immediately took the ALS ice bucket challenge. His staff posted video on his "Late Night" show’s Instagram account.

In the video, Meyers thanks Jessica Biel for nominating him for the fundraising challenge, and then nominates Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
