Challen Faamatau and Ranan Mamiya scored two touchdowns each as No. 5 Farrington overwhelmed Aiea 52-0 on Saturday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.
Farrington improved to 4-0 in OIA Blue Division play, just days after legendary former Governors coach Skippa Diaz died.
"I feel OK. We dedicated the season to Coach Diaz and we came out playing spirited, so we want to continue to play with that passion," said Farrington coach Randall Okimoto, who played for Diaz.
Aiea fell to 2-1 after early wins over Kailua and Kaiser. The latter win (Kaiser) came by forfeiture after the Cougars reported an ineligible player had participated in Kaiser’s on-field win.
Farrington, though, was clearly the faster, bigger and stronger squad in a matchup of unbeatens.
"It’s a big loss, but they’re a physically much bigger team than us. I’m glad our guys never gave up. They’ve got to learn to be consistent and believe they can play," Aiea coach Wendell Say said. "Farrington’s a physical team. They’ve got depth there (at running back). Defensively, we want to wear down one back, but they’ve got so many."
Faamatau scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards, and also had a 53-yard jaunt to set up an early score for his team. He finished with 86 rushing yards on seven carries.
"Our job is to hit the hole and let our linemen do their jobs," Faamatau said. "We dedicated this season to Skippa Diaz. There’s one name he had for the linemen, and that was the ‘Bamboolas.’ I say the Bamboolas were our linemen tonight."
Mamiya rushed for a season-low 34 yards, but returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown and also was part of the Govs’ trickeration, throwing a 71-yard touchdown pass.
Farrington rushed for 204 yards on 26 attempts and quarterback Montana Liana was crisp with 100 passing yards (7-for-13). The Governors finished with 375 total yards.
Defensively, linemen Seufagafaga Luafatasaga and Breiden Fehoko led the front seven, limiting Aiea to 10 rushing yards (20 carries). Na Alii finished with 68 total yards as Luafatasaga and Fehoko led a relentless pass rush on Aiea’s 6-foot-2, 230-pound QB, Jordan Liilii.
The Governors scored on the opening possession of the game. Faamatau’s 53-yard cutback run, with a bone-crunching block by Freedom Alualu, led to a 1-yard TD run by Mamiya.
"He whacks the 1-technique and we make our way to the end zone," Faamatau said of Alualu, a running back who lined up as a slotback.
Alualu went in motion toward the offensive line before the snap.
"I asked if he likes to do that, and he said he loves to knock people off their feet. Freedom’s the man to do that."
Aiea had a couple of three-and-outs before Farrington hit paydirt again. Mamiya’s 20-yard punt return and 28-yard gain on a toss sweep set up a 1-yard blast over the end zone by Faamatau. The Govs led 14-0 with 2:19 left in the opening quarter.
