This year’s bracket in the Division I portion of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts/HHSAA State Boys Soccer championship looks pretty familiar.
Three of the top four seeds are the same as last year, with only Kaiser staying home, and 10 of the 12 programs who were in the tournament last season return this year. Pearl City missed out for the first time in four years.
Kahuku is in the tournament for the first time since 1997 and Kalaheo is in for the first time since 2009.
The ILH champion Raiders earned the top seed and will play the winner between Hilo and Kapolei on Saturday at Kapolei. The Hurricanes, who went undefeated at home this year, host the Vikings on Friday.
The Hurricanes lost to Kalani in penalty kicks in the semifinals of the OIA tournament at Castle, but were rewarded by the HHSAA with home matches in the first two rounds.
OIA champion Mililani doesn’t get to stay home, but at least it can stay on its home island. The Trojans play the winner between Baldwin and Kahuku at Kapolei on Saturday.
The semifinals and championships are Feb. 27 and 28 at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.
Four Oahu teams will travel to Maui for the first two rounds, with Kalani and Moanalua hooking up at Kamehameha-Maui on Friday and ILH runner-up Punahou playing Kalaheo at the same venue. The Falcons beat Na Menehune 1-0 during the regular season.
BIIF champ Kealakehe waits for the winner between the Buffanblu and Mustangs, while host Kamehameha-Maui gets the winner between Kalani and Moanalua.
‘Iolani, which was the top seed last year, is trying to become the first team to repeat since David Trifonovitch and Punahou did it in 2010-11. The ILH champion has won the tournament three times in the past six years.
