No. 20 Hawaii turns back St. John’s in volleyball

Junior middle Olivia Magill put down 15 kills and No. 20 Hawaii rebounded from Friday’s five-set loss to No. 22 Oregon with a 19-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-22 victory over St. John’s Saturday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Magill, named the Most Outstanding Player of the 27th Hawaiian Airlines Classic, finished with a double-double when coming up with school-record 12 block assists .The Rainbow Wahine (4-2, 2-2) finished with a season-high 20 blocks.
Junior hitter Tai Manu-Olevao added 13 kills and freshman Kalei Greeley had 11. Manu-Olevao was named to the all-tournament team, along with Oregon’s Liz Brenner, Frankie Shebby and Martenne Bettendorf; Karin Palgutova of St. John’s and New Mexico’s Chantale Riddle.
The Red Storm (5-2, 1-2) got a match-high 18 kills from Palgutova, a junior hitter. Senior hitter Aleksandra Wachowicz added 10 kills.
In Saturday’s second match, No. 22 Oregon (6-0, 3-0) got 15 kills from both Brenner and Bettendorf when defeating New Mexico 25-18, 24-26, 25-19, 25-19. Riddle led the Lobos (2-4, 0-3) with 16 kills.
