A retired Honolulu police major was arrested Thursday on suspicion of negligent homicide in the pedestrian death of Mililani resident Shari Afuso.
Charles T. Duncan, 72, also of Mililani, was released, pending further investigation. He has not been charged.
Duncan, contacted Thursday, declined to comment on the investigation.
"On the advice of my attorney, I’m not making any statement at this time," Duncan told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser by telephone.
Honolulu police said Afuso was jogging in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by a 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck turning left onto Kuahelani Avenue from the southbound lanes of Meheula Parkway after 7 p.m. Feb. 5.
Afuso was transported in critical condition by Honolulu Emergency Medical Service workers to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she died.
The Honolulu medical examiner said the cause of her death was cranial cerebral injuries due to blunt force trauma.
Afuso, 49, mother of two teenage children, was the courtroom manager for Judge Kevin Chang at U.S. District Court.
Family members said she jogged regularly and was only a couple of blocks from her home when she was struck by the pickup truck.
Duncan served 32 years in the Honolulu Police Department and was a watch commander for the department before he retired.
He was involved in dog obedience training and judging before he joined the staff of the Hawaiian Humane Society. He retired after serving as its field services manager, overseeing 10 investigators who respond to complaints about animals and animal abuse and neglect.
