Man charged in toddler death indicted in mother’s death
HILO » A Mountain View man charged in the January 2011 beating death of a toddler has been indicted on charges that he killed the child’s mother eight months later.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports a Hilo grand jury on Wednesday indicted 39-year-old Xavier "Pee Wee" Cortez Jr. in the September 2011 death of 20-year-old Sommer Ferreira.
The indictment says Cortez killed Ferreira because she witnessed him beating her daughter, Pomaikai K. Ferreira, to death in January 2011.
Cortez is a former professional boxer. He shared a Wainaku apartment with Ferreira and her daughter.
Cortez was arrested in January 2014 after a grand jury indicted him in the death of the child.
He is scheduled for trial in that case in May.
