The 23-year-old homeless man, who has a history sleeping near city parks and harassing neighbors in Manoa and Kaimuki, allegedly attacked a man outside of a Kahala District Park restroom last month — yet another incident in a mounting list of run-ins with the law.
According to court documents, Yama Fazzari was charged with third-degree assault for allegedly punching a man on the side of the head on Aug. 22, causing minor injuries. The victim said Fazzari fled the Kahala park in a green Honda after allegedly attacking him at 4 p.m.
Fazzari is in custody unable to post bail of $1,000. He is scheduled to appear in District Court on Monday. He is also to appear in Circuit Court that day in a separate assault case.
Fazzari was charged with resisting arrest and assault on Thursday when officers attempted to take him into custody. Both charges are misdemeanors.
According to a police affidavit, Fazzari was sleeping in a green Honda at Kapolono Park, bordered by 12th and Kilauea avenues, shortly after midnight when several police officers approached his vehicle and ordered him to get out. Fazzari refused, grabbing the car’s steering wheel. Fazzari was then arrested and taken to the hospital and treated for pre-existing injuries to his left ankle and arms, according to the police statement.
Kaimuki police said Fazzari is well known in the Kahala-Kaimuki area and is a suspect in several incidents. In addition, last month, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that Fazzari had been arrested for soliciting a prostitute in the Ala Moana area.
All of his arrests have occurred while Fazzari was out on bail.
» In June, Fazzari entered a no-contest plea for picking a fight and kicking people at Manoa Valley District Park on Feb. 22. A judge sentenced him to seven days in jail, fined him $30 and ordered him to stay away from the park.
» His Circuit Court appearance set for Monday is for allegedly threatening a couple at the Ala Moana Center Feb. 26.
» Fazzari is also scheduled to appear on Sept. 17 in Circuit Court for allegedly assaulting a man on July 1 at the McDonald’s restaurant in Kahala.
» On Sept. 18, Fazzari is slated is to appear in District Court for allegedly soliciting a prostitute at the Ala Moana Hotel on Aug. 20.
Fazzari, according to Manoa Valley Neighborhood Security Watch, harassed residents near Manoa Marketplace and other areas in the valley in February.
