Gymnasts jumping for spots on U.S. teams
Three Hawaii gymnasts are competing at the USA Gymnastics National Team Selection Camp in Huntsville, Texas.
Sydney Senter, 12, a student at Hawaii Baptist Academy; Alexander Paul, 12, Moanalua Elementary; and Kayttie Nakamura, 12, Kaimuki Middle, are vying for spots on the U.S. National Trampoline Gymnastics Teams that will compete at the World Age Group Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla., in November.
The three local gymnasts represent the Hawaii Trampoline and Tumbling Club and train at Hawaii Academy in Honolulu.
Vulcans sweep in East-West Challenge
The Hawaii-Hilo women’s volleyball team opened its season with a sweep of Daemen College, 25-16, 25-13, 25-9, in the East-West Challenge at the Cannon Activity Center on Friday.
Sophomore outside hitter Marley Strand-Nicolaisen led the Vulcans (1-0) with 14 kills and hit .333. Strand-Nicolaisen also served four of the team’s nine aces. Sienna Davis dished out 31 assists for UH-Hilo, which also outblocked the Wildcats 10-1. Lindsey Nowak finished with seven kills for Daemen (0-3).
