Man charged with robbing restaurant
A 26-year-old man who acquaintances say committed at least nine robberies on Oahu was charged Sunday with the robbery of Elena’s Restaurant in Waipahu.
Lindsey Furtado, who is homeless, was charged with first-degree robbery and unauthorized entry into a dwelling. His bail was set at $250,000.
Police said Furtado robbed Elena’s with a 12-inch knife at about 7:10 a.m. Saturday and fled with cash. He forced his way into a nearby Kahuamoku Place apartment, where police arrested him about a half-hour later.
Waipahu residents who know Furtado told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he lives in Waipahu District Park and admitted to robbing several businesses in recent months. Furtado bragged about robbing four businesses last week, one man who knows him said.
Police said detectives are investigating whether Furtado is connected with some of the recent robberies of businesses on Oahu.
On Friday police held a news conference about a rash of robberies at fast-food restaurants, convenience stores and banks over the past several months. Police suspect at least three bandits or groups of criminals are involved.
City IDs victim of fatal motorcycle crash
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victim in a motorcycle crash in Haleiwa early Saturday morning as 33-year-old Christopher Danley of Honolulu.
Police said excessive speed and alcohol may have been factors in a motorcycle crash that killed Danley near the Weed Circle junction in Haleiwa at about 12:40 a.m.
Danley lost control of his 2003 Harley-Davidson motorcycle while turning onto Kamehameha Highway from Weed Circle, police said.
The motorcycle hit a guardrail, and Danley was ejected over the guardrail into some bushes. He sustained major head and body injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was not wearing a helmet.
The death is the 37th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared with 38 at the same time last year.
