No. 22 Oregon holds off No. 20 Wahine in 5 sets
The No. 20 University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine, falling behind 0-2 to the No. 22 Oregon Ducks Friday night, saw their rally fall short in their Hawaiian Airlines Classic match.
Senior All-American Liz Brenner put down 18 kills and Oregon used a 5-0 run early in Set 5 to survive, 25-18, 25-15, 19-25, 18-25, 15-8 in front of a Stan Sheriff Center crowd of 5,841.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-2, 1-1) got an impressive outing from junior middle Olivia Magill (18 kills, 6 blocks) and junior hitter Tai Manu-Olivao (14 kills,3 aces). Freshman hitter Kalei Greeley added 13 kills for Hawaii, which has a quick turnaround when seeing St. John’s (5-1, 1-1) Saturday in rare noon contest. It’s believed to be the earliest start time for a home match since 1982 when Hurricane Iniki forced the UH-Pacific match to rescheduled for a Saturday morning and was played in Klum Gym during a rolling blackout.
The tournament concludes with Oregon (5-0, 2-0) — which has all but clinched the tournament title — and New Mexico (2-3, -2) meeting at 2:30 p.m. The Lobos were swept 25-22, 25-18, 25-12 by the Red Storm in Friday’s first match.
