The implosion of the Clarion just east of the Strip took place as scheduled at about 3 a.m. Tuesday morning, but not everything "went down" as planned. About nine stories of the elevator core survived the explosions and remained standing.
After about 12 hours, a crane was brought in to take down the surviving column. It was the first miss for Controlled Demolition Inc., which had overseen 12 previous "perfect" Las Vegas implosions until running into unlucky No. 13 at the Clarion. It’s estimated that it will take about a month to clear the rubble from the site, which owners say will be home to a new mixed-use resort catering to conventioneers. A second structure, the Gramercy residential tower, on the southwest side of town, was scheduled to be imploded this weekend.
Omnia opening date: Omnia Nightclub at Caesars Palace will open March 12. The mega-club that’s taking the place of Pure will debut with mega-DJ Calvin Harris, who will jump over from Hakkasan at MGM. The Hakkasan Group operates both venues.
Not so special: Every year the lunch special in Estiatorio Milos at the Cosmopolitan goes up a little. Usually it’s by a penny to reflect the new year (it went from $22.13 to $22.14 in 2014), but this year it went up $3.01 to $25.15. It’s a good three-course meal, available seven days a week from noon to 3:30 p.m., but this latest price rise takes it out of bargain range.
QUESTION: Has anything changed with the length of the lines at the new White Castle on the Strip?
ANSWER: Things have calmed down at the White Castle hamburger outlet at Casino Royale. Lines are constant, but they’re much smaller now, causing only about a five-minute wait to get to the window. Parking is available in the lot or garage behind the casino. Vote for your favorite Las Vegas hamburger in a poll running now at LasVegasAdvisor.com.
