Public schools resume Monday, except Waiakea High

Educators ask lawmakers for additional money to lighten workloads linked to reforms

All Hawaii State Department of Education public schools will resume on Monday except Waiakea High, which served as an emergency shelter for Hilo residents during Hurricane Iselle.

Dozens of DOE schools served as shelters from Thursday to Saturday. An estimated 400 people stayed at Waiakea High, the DOE said.

Waiakea High staff will report to work on Monday to get the school back in order for students. Waiakea students will return to school on Tuesday.

“Our employees, especially our complex area superintendents and principals worked around the clock in caring for students and school communities during the stormy weather,” said Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi in a news release. “We appreciate their dedication in going above and beyond to help with the emergency needs of our communities.”
