Canadian author and award-winning journalist Naomi Klein will speak about her latest book, "This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate" Thursday evening at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Klein, who holds the Dai Ho Chun Distinguished Chair in the UH College of Arts and Sciences, will speak from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Campus Center Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.
No tickets are required for the event. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
When published in September, "This Changes Everything" (Simon & Schuster, $30) debuted at No. 5 on the New York Times bestseller list and is at the top of multiple bestseller lists in the U.S., U.K. and Canada.
In the book, Klein argues that climate change is a wakeup call delivered in the language of fires, floods, droughts and extinctions, requiring more than just changing light bulbs.
Klein also points out that our economic system and planetary system are at war with each other.
"Or more accurately, our economy is at war with many forms of life on earth, including human life," she writes in the book.
"What the climate needs to avoid collapse is a contraction in humanity’s use of resources: what our economic model demands to avoid collapse is unfettered expansion. Only one of these sets of rules can be changed, and it’s not the laws of nature."
At the same time, she documents some inspiring movements and examples of change.
Klein, 44, is also a contributing editor for Harper’s, a reporter for "Rolling Stone" and a syndicated columnist for "The Nation" and "The Guardian."
Her earlier books include "No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies" and "The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism."
Klein holds an honorary doctorate of civil laws degree from the University of King’s College, Nova Scotia.
