Open slots remain for a Kakaako-based youth arts workshop in September that will involve creating warehouse-scale sculpture from concept to fruition.
The Nest Workshop, for youth ages 10 to 14, will take place in two 5,000-square-foot warehouses on Cooke Street. It’s presented by Kakaako-based Present Project — a residency project for artists launched earlier this year by Lana Lane Studios member Hadley Nunes.
Nest — inspired by the way birds construct their nests from found materials — is run by Bryan Welch, who has taught and developed curricula for alternative educational programs since 1997 in the U.S. and Japan. He’s the director of New York-based learning and design group Guilds (www.guilds.co).
The five resident artists include Florence Carbonne (Miami), Swoon (New York), Dinorah de Jesus Rodriguez (Miami) and collaborative duo Sally Lundburg and Keith Tallett (Hawaii island).
Incorporating students’ work, they will create structures out of bamboo, guava and other found materials.
Nest Workshop sessions run 3-5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, Sept. 3 to Oct. 3 at the 445/449 Cooke St. warehouses. Public observers are welcome 2:30-5:30 p.m. Visit presentproject.org or call Nunes at 917-806-0426.
Note: Three talks by Nest artists are coming up. Hear from Lundburg and Tallett 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at Kakaako Agora, 441 Cooke St.; Swoon and Welch, 7-8 p.m. Sept. 5, University of Hawaii-Manoa art department; and Carbonne and Rodriguez, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 10, Kakaako Agora.
