Kono shoots to fourth at Gateway Classic
A final-round 68 sent Honolulu’s Stephanie Kono to a fourth-place finish in last week’s Gateway Classic, the first Symetra Tour event of the year. It is Kono’s best Symetra finish in her two-plus years on the tour, aside from a T3 at the same tournament two years ago.
Kono, who shot 71 the first two days, ended up at 6-under 201 and collected $3,344. She moved up 14 spots on the final day in Mesa, Ariz.
Hannah O’Sullivan, 16, became the youngest to win on the tour, and Symetra’s first amateur champ in 16 years. She had a three-day total of 15-under 201, four better than Haley Italia. Italian Giulia Molinaro shot 67 — the day’s low round — to take third at 208.
Hilo’s Britney Yada missed the cut in her Symetra debut.
Yada and Kono are playing this week’s Volvik Championship. It tees off Friday in Beaumont, Calif.
