Vegas earns medals in track and field
Kamehameha Schools graduate Kasandra Vegas earned two bronze medals in the Oceania Area track and field championships and a prestigious athletic scholarship.
Vegas, who attends the University of Sydney, where she is a master’s degree candidate in international public health, finished third in the women’s discus and hammer throw events in competition among 25 nations at Rarotonga, Cook Islands.
By virtue of her performance, Vegas qualifies to compete in the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby, New Guinea, in March, where she hopes to earn qualifying marks for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
In addition, Vegas was offered a scholarship from her school’s sport and fitness program to assist "with concurrent pursuit of academic and sporting excellence." She also has been admitted to its athlete program, which will allow her to train and receive coaching with the country’s leading athletes and Olympic hopefuls.
Vegas was a member of the track team at Northern Arizona University, where she earned an undergraduate degree. She was the Big Sky Conference’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year in 2013.
No. 2 Mililani, No. 3 Saint Louis to meet
The big early-season football show pitting No. 2 Mililani vs. No. 3 Saint Louis will still happen, but not this weekend.
Mililani coach Rod York confirmed Friday that the game will be played Aug. 16 at the Trojans’ John Kauinana Stadium. The junior varsity contest will start at 4 p.m.
"It’s official," York said via phone message. "The game has been approved by the OIA and ILH. We’re good to go."
The showdown, originally scheduled for Saturday, was called off because of approaching hurricanes Iselle and Julio.
The rescheduled contest was made possible by McKinley, which is forfeiting its game scheduled for Aug. 16 against Mililani because of problems with injuries and eligibility.
The Trojans of the OIA made it all the way to the state title game a year ago. The Crusaders of the ILH have legendary coach Cal Lee back at the helm. Lee led Saint Louis to 14 Prep Bowl titles, including 13 in a row from 1986 to ’98, before winning the first Hawaii state championship in 1999. He last coached an official Saint Louis game in 2001.
Averill, Crabb named to Pan Am Cup team
Hawaii incoming senior Taylor Averill and Punahou graduate Taylor Crabb were named to the 12-member U.S. men’s volleyball team that will compete at the IX Men’s Pan American Cup, Monday through Saturday, in Tijuana, Mexico.
Averill is one of four middle blockers named. Crabb, who recently finished his playing career at Long Beach State, is among the five outside hitters.
The U.S. is in a pool with Colombia and Mexico. Brazil, which is not participating in the event this year, is the defending champion of the annual event last held in 2013 in Mexico City.
