Kauai Police are investigating a three-car crash that killed one man and injured three others, one critically, Tuesday night on Kuhio Highway in Kilauea, just south of Wailapa Road.

The crash occurred at around 7:25 p.m., when a north-bound Ford pickup truck sideswiped a south-bound Jeep SUV. The pickup truck then struck an oncoming Dodge SUV, causing the Dodge SUV to overturn.

The man driving the Dodge SUV died following the crash. A male passenger in the SUV was taken to Wilcox Hospital in critical condition and flown to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

The man driving the Ford pickup and woman driving the Jeep SUV were taken to Wilcox Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police closed Kuhio Highway in both directions for about  six hours while first responders worked to clear the scene. Both lanes were reopened at about 1:30 a.m. The incident is Kauai’s first traffic fatality for 2014.
