McKinley endured stagnant west-bound traffic to get to Pearl City on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers will gladly take another lengthy bus ride out to the North Shore on Saturday after extending their season with a 42-29 win over the host Chargers in the first round of the OIA Red boys basketball tournament.
Dan Villejo scored a game-high 14 points and Macjun Otarra added 11 as McKinley advanced out of the one-and-done opening round to face second-ranked Kahuku in a quarterfinal game scheduled for 6 p.m.
After McKinley closed the regular season with a loss at Kaimuki on Feb. 6, coach Duane Omori said the Tigers used the week off to regroup and focused on defense in practices leading up to the postseason tournament.
The emphasis paid off on Friday, as McKinley’s 2-3 zone limited Pearl City’s production in the paint early and the Tigers guards hounded passing lanes to create scoring opportunities off steals.
"We knew they had (center Garrette Kanamu). He’s a real presence inside and we’ve been struggling with teams that have a good center and we worked a lot on that," Omori said.
McKinley arrived at Pearl City about 40 minutes before the scheduled 6 p.m. tip-off and Otarra helped jump-start the Tigers in the opening minutes. He found soft spots in Pearl City’s zone along the baseline and hit three mid-range jumpers in the game’s first three minutes.
On the defensive end, the Tigers packed their zone into the paint and held Pearl City to nine points in the first half.
"We weren’t aggressive," Pearl City coach Lionel Villarmia said. "It’s not like we hadn’t seen a 2-3 zone the whole year. We’d seen it and we weren’t aggressive."
Pearl City guard Tylor Canon tried to spark the Chargers from the perimeter with seven points in the third quarter, and they closed to 28-23 when Pierce McMoore hit a 3-pointer early in the fourth.
But Villejo converted a Mark Burke steal into a layup on the other end to start a 9-0 McKinley run that put the Tigers firmly in control.
"We just had to stop their big guys and when they turned over the ball we just ran the break, transition all day," Villejo said.
