Inmate skips out while on work furlough
A 27-year-old inmate on work furlough from Oahu Community Correctional Center failed to return Tuesday.
The Department of Public Safety reported that Brandon Medeiros left OCCC at 8:30 a.m. and failed to return at 1:30 p.m. as scheduled.
Medeiros is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 154 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes and a tattoo under his left eye and on the right side of his neck.
He is serving time for second-degree assault, second-degree robbery and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
Medeiros is a community custody inmate — the lowest classification status — and is in the work furlough program.
2 kayakers helped to shore at Kailua
Ocean Safety lifeguards rescued two kayakers in distress near the Mokulua Islands on Tuesday afternoon.
The kayakers were 400 yards offshore from Lanikai, said Shayne Enright, Emergency Services Department spokeswoman. The lifeguards responded at about 3:10 p.m., and using a rescue watercraft they brought a 62-year-old man to the Kailua Beach Park boat ramp. Emergency Medical Services transported the patient to a hospital in serious condition due to exhaustion. Other kayakers helped bring the second kayaker, who did not need medical aid, to shore.
