Brittany Hitchcock turned in her second straight complete-game performance against a Pac-12 team and the University of Hawaii softball team won its rematch with Utah 5-1 on Sunday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hitchcock gave up five hits over the first two innings then didn’t surrender another until the seventh and the Rainbow Wahine avenged Saturday’s 8-1 loss to the Utes in the first game of their Outrigger Resorts Spring Fling Tournament doubleheader.

The Wahine offense then overpowered East Carolina in an 11-3 win in six innings in the tournament finale. UH (16-9) pounded out a season-high 15 hits, including four home runs, to finish the tournament at 4-1.

Hawaii and East Carolina meet again in a stand-alone game on Tuesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Utah (17-6) took the lead when Marissa Mendenhall drilled a double to the right-center gap to lead off the top of the second and came around to score on a throwing error on Heather Bowen’s infield single.

UH did all of its damage in the bottom the third inning, sending 11 batters to the plate in the five-run rally. The Wahine loaded the bases and Kayla Wartner gave UH the lead with a double over the left fielder. Keiki Carlos, Lindsey Willmon and Heather Morales followed with RBI singles to extend the lead to 5-1.

Hitchcock retired 12 consecutive Utah batters before giving up a leadoff single in the top of the seventh and ended the game three straight ground ball outs. She walked one and didn’t record a strikeout, relying on the Wahine defense in her fourth complete game of the season.

Hitchcock got the start against East Carolina as well and gave up a run in the top of the second on Megan Quick’s two-hour RBI single. Kanani AIna Cabrales entered in relief in the third inning and kept UH within a run.

Tayana Mata led off the bottom of the third with an opposite field double and Wartner capped an 11-pitch at-bat with a home run into the tennis courts beyond center field to give UH a 2-1 lead.

The Wahine put together a five-run rally with two out in the bottom of the fourth. UH loaded the bases and Carlos drilled a single to center field to score Rachel Lack and Mata slid around the attempted tag at the plate.

Lindsey Willmon then lifted an opposite field home run to right to extend the lead to 7-1.

Lack and Leisha Li’ili’i hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning and Li’ili’i ended the game in the sixth with a double into the left-field corner to score Lack from first.

Aina Cabrales gave up two runs on three hits, struck out three and walked two while improving to 8-6.

Morales was named the tournament MVP while Hitchcock claimed Most Valuable Pitcher honors.
