The National Weather Service is predicting potentially dangerous surf and the return of the trade winds by Wednesday.

A high surf warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday as waves reaching 20 to 28 feet roll ashore on north-facing beaches and 15 to 22 foot waves hit west shores today.

The warning affects north and west shores of Kauai County, Oahu and Molokai and north shores of Maui.

Forecasters say beachgoers can expect significan shorebreak and dangerous currents making entering the water "very hazardous."

The waves may also impact west and north facing harbors.

The surf should begin to decline on Wednesday, reaching advisory levels on Thursday.

Meanwhile, forecasters say north winds will bring another cool night Tuesday, followed by a brief return of trade winds on Wednesday.

A new cold front is approaching the islands from the northwest and winds will turn southerly starting Wednesday night, bringing humidity and vog.

The front could bring scattered showers to Honolulu Thursday night through Friday with trade winds returning by Saturday.
