Hawaii edges USD in tennis
Cindy Nguyen rallied to defeat Marta Stojanovic at No. 1 singles to give Hawaii the deciding point in a 4-3 victory over San Diego in a women’s tennis match Thursday in San Diego.
The Rainbow Wahine, ranked 54th, trailed 3-2 going into the final two matches. Viktoria Malova’s 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Dana Oppinger at No. 2 tied it and Nguyen then rallied, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, to clinch the win.
No. 13 Seasiders upset
Scott Friel scored 18 points but No. 13 Brigham Young-Hawaii couldn’t dig itself out of an early hole, falling to No. 23 Azusa Pacific 88-74 at Azusa, Calif.
Pablo Coro added 11 points for the Seasiders (18-3, 12-3) against the Cougars (20-4, 13-3).

» Justin Long scored 22 points to lead Hawaii Pacific (14-8, 9-7) to a 79-75 win over Point Loma Nazarene (18-6, 11-6)
» Gelaun Wheelwright scored 15 points and No. 22 Cal Baptist (18-4, 12-3) held on for a 65-63 win over Hawaii Hilo (10-11, 9-9).
» Kuany Kuany scored 22 points but it was not enough as Chaminade (9-12, 6-9) lost 93-91 to Dixie State (16-6, 13-3) at St. George, Utah.
Williams’ 33 leads Vulcans
Kirstie Willams scored 33 points, incluidng six 3-pointers, to lead Hawaii Hilo to a 77-73 upset of Cal Baptist Thursday in a PacWest women’s basketball game in Riverside, Calif.
Whitney Edens added 11 points for the Vulcans (8-11, 7-8) against the Lancers (19-4, 12-3).

» Veanne Navaro scored 23 points and Morganne Comstock added 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead Hawaii Pacific (19-4, 14-2) to a 68-64 victory over Point Loma (14-10, 12-5) in San Diego.
» Katie Buskey scored 24 points and Lilia Maio added 19 points and 10 rebounds as Chaminade(6-13, 6-9) pulled out a 78-74 victory over Dixie State (7-15, 6-10) in St. George, Utah.
Buskey and Maio each had three 3-pointers and the Silverswords (6-13, 6-9) were 9 of 16 from behind the arc. Glacen Florita added 13 points, including three critical free throws in the final minute against the Red Storm (7-15, 6-10).
» Emily Nelson scored 12 points but Brigham Young-Hawaii (12-9, 9-6) could not overcome 27 percent shooting from the floor when falling 59-46 to Azusa Paciic (15-8, 11-5) in Azusa, Calif.
Vulcans split in softball
Vanessa Salinas tossed a two-hit, four-strikeout complete game and Danielle Pulido and Amanda Lara eached drove in runs as Hawaii Hilo won the opener of a nonconference softball doubleheader 2-0 over Chico State Thursday in Chico, Calif.
The Vulcans (3-3) dropped the second game 4-1 to the Wildcats (1-1).
Hilo drops baseball opener
Menlo scored two runs in the top of the fourth to rally past Hawaii Hilo 5-4 Thursday in a nonconference baseball game in Hilo.
Korin Medeiros’ two-run single helped the Vulcans (0-1) take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third against the Oaks (7-2).
