One weekend in February doesn’t make or break a college baseball season.
However, since Oregon made its first trip out here under George Horton in 2010, how the series has gone has been a good indicator of things to come.
The 16th-ranked Ducks will ride an 11-game winning streak against the Rainbow Warriors into tonight’s opener that kicks off the 2015 season at Les Murakami Stadium.
Oregon, which has gone to a regional in four out of the past five years, swept Hawaii each of the past two seasons, which eventually became the first consecutive losing seasons for UH in four decades.
The last series win UH had over Oregon came in 2010, when the ‘Bows won the WAC title and advanced to a regional final.
"The last couple of years we’ve had holes in our roster for whatever reason and (Oregon) has exploited those holes and made the best of them because they are so talented," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "We feel that we’re at full strength from a health standpoint more than we’ve been in three years, but even at full strength, they are going to challenge you like no one else in the country."
The Ducks are ranked as high as 15th in the six major college polls but have had some injury troubles.
Opening night starter Cole Irvin, who got the win in his collegiate debut here two years ago, is coming off Tommy John surgery and will be held to a low pitch count of 30 to 35 pitches.
Matt Krook, a sandwich pick in the 2013 draft who dazzled in his collegiate debut here last year, will miss most of the season, if not all, after undergoing Tommy John surgery last year.
The rest of the staff, including the three other starters this weekend, have combined for only seven Division I starts.
"It’s going to be an interesting journey," Horton said. "I’ve come out and said that we think we’re a pretty deep team. The nucleus of this team, position player-wise, could be very special but it’s only potential until it shows up in performance."
Oregon returns six position starters, including Golden Spikes Award nominee Shaun Chase at catcher and All-Pac-12 third baseman Mitchell Tolman, who moves over to second.
Sophomore Mark Karaviotis, a Maui High alum, solidified his spot as the team’s starting shortstop after hitting .254 as a freshman with 23 RBIs.
"He’s driving more in the gaps consistently, is more of a complete hitter and has grown up a lot," Horton said. "He didn’t play in the summer and put on 15 to 20 pounds and looks good."
Following Irvin in 2013 and Krook last year, left-hander David Peterson appears to be the next stud freshman in the pecking order to open his career for the Ducks in Hawaii.
Peterson broke his leg playing basketball as a senior in high school, which caused his draft stock to fall, allowing Oregon to add another major-league type arm to its roster.
"We’re hoping he’s the next one," Horton said. "(Peterson) is a little different style and he’s 6-6 but he has crazy movement like Krook had. I just hope he doesn’t throw as many wild pitches as Krook did."
Krook didn’t allow an earned run and struck out eight against Hawaii last season but threw seven wild pitches.
UH let a two-run lead in the ninth inning get away in that game, but has played Oregon tough despite the losing streak.
Four of the 11 losses during the streak have been by a single run.
"Our guys are excited about it because what (Oregon) does for you is give you that excitement even in the dog days of September and October, because you’re looking at that opening weekend against one of the premiere teams in college baseball," Trapasso said. "It’s created that motivation for them."
The teams will take a year off from playing each other in 2016 before Oregon returns in ’17. The Ducks will open at San Diego State while Hawaii will host New Mexico.
