Man is indicted in fatal Chinatown beating
An Oahu grand jury Tuesday indicted a 35-year-old man for allegedly beating and killing a 57-year-old homeless man in Chinatown last month.
Michael Abella, who also is homeless, was indicted on a charge of second-degree murder. His bail was set at $200,000.
Police said Abella attacked Shelton Higa twice on July 17 in Chinatown. After the severe beatings, Higa was taken to the hospital and died 12 days later of brain injuries after being taken off life support.
Moped rider critically injured in Kailua
A 43-year-old man was critically injured Wednesday evening when the moped he was riding crashed into a parked car in Kailua, Emergency Medical Services reported.
The man taken in critical condition to a trauma center. He was not wearing a helmet.
The collision occurred at 7:47 p.m. fronting 169 Kihapai St. Traffic investigators responded to the accident.
Inmate missing since July 26 turns self in A work furlough inmate missing since July 26 turned himself in Wednesday morning.
Eric Pixley voluntarily turned himself in at Oahu Community Correctional Center at about 9:15 a.m. He will be booked on an additional escape charge, the Department of Public Safety said.
Pixley was reported missing after a 1:30 a.m. head count on July 26. DPS said it is investigating how he left the Laumaka Work Furlough Center.
Laumaka is a minimum-security work furlough center, about a block away from OCCC. Inmates assigned to Laumaka are either actively seeking employment or working in the community and have less than two years left on their sentences.
Pixley was serving time for a probation violation.
Boy found in pool is brought to hospital
A 2-year-old boy nearly drowned Wednesday at a pool in Kaneohe, an Emergency Medical Services report said.
The boy was reportedly found at the bottom of a pool.
EMS responded to the 3:35 p.m. incident at 46-124 Humu St.
EMS transported the boy to a hospital in serious condition.
Prisoner on furlough escapes custody
Kauai police are searching for a 25-year-old extended furlough inmate who escaped from custody Tuesday night.
Tyson Yadao ran from his transitional home in Lihue at about 8:30 p.m. when Kauai Community Correctional Center adult corrections officers went to the home to bring him back to the facility. Kauai Police were then notified.
Extended furlough allows an inmate to live and work outside a prison facility, but the inmate must check in at KCCC at various times each week.
Yadao is 5 feet 9 inches, has brown hair and eyes, and weighs 210 pounds. If seen, the public is urged to call 911.
Yadao was serving time for burglary, theft, forgery and assault against a law enforcement officer. Once returned, he will face an additional escape charge.
