A composite satellite image produced Thursday afternoon showed low, patchy clouds looming over the north and northeastern areas of most islands.

Winds are expected to increase out of the southwest Friday as a front approaches from the northwest. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind advisory for parts of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai and Maui from noon Friday through 6 p.m. Saturday.

A high surf advisory is posted for north- and west-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai, according to the National Weather Service. Surf is expected to remain elevated Thursday night until a northwest swell declines.

Surf of 14 to 18 feet is expected along the north- and west-facing shores of Niihau and Kauai and along north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui. West-facing shores of Oahu and Molokai can expect surf of 8 to 12 feet through about 6 p.m. Friday.

An approaching front is expected to bring increased southwesterly winds late Friday afternoon with gusts over Kauai and Oahu through early Saturday, forecaster said. Sustained winds of at least 30 mph with localized gusts up to 50 mph are expected late Friday afternoon through Saturday.

Weather officials expect the front to bring overcast skies and showers to Kauai as early as Friday night, to Oahu and Maui County Saturday, and to the leeward side of the Big Island Saturday night. On Sunday, dry northerly winds are expected to follow the front.
