Woman injures head in Hanauma Bay fall
A North Shore woman fell 20 feet to 30 feet into the ocean from a ledge at the mouth of Hanauma Bay and was rescued by a fisherman, officials said.
The incident happened about 9:20 a.m. Wednesday near "Baboon’s Nose," a rock formation on the southern outside edge of the bay, which is not visible to lifeguards. Public access to the area is restricted.
A spokeswoman for the city Ocean Safety Division said lifeguards responded on paddleboards and personal watercraft and stabilized the woman on a backboard until the Honolulu Fire Department’s rescue helicopter arrived and airlifted her to the Koko Head Shooting Range.
An ambulance crew treated the woman for a head injury and abrasions. She also swallowed ocean water.
The woman was in serious condition when emergency workers transported her to a hospital.
Kaaawa man, 30, named as crash victim
The city Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a 30-year-old man who was killed Friday when the pickup truck he was driving crashed into a rock wall near Kaaawa Elementary School as Robert Spina of Kaaawa.
Emergency Medical Services said paramedics transported Spina in critical condition to a hospital, where he later died. He was not wearing a seat belt.
The cause of death was not released.
