A Board of Water Supply truck is parked Thursday night on Dole Street, near buckled pavement where a 20-inch water main broke at about 3 p.m.

Water service was slowly restored to customers in Manoa, St. Louis Heights and Makiki affected by a 20-inch main break on Dole Street near the University of Hawaii Center for Hawaiian Studies building Thursday.

UH Manoa said the campus will be open Friday after water was restored to the upper campus by about 9 p.m.

The main broke at about 2 p.m., cutting air conditioning and water service to the upper campus and student housing. The main break also affected water service to other customers in Manoa, St. Louis Heights, Makiki Heights and Lower Makiki.

Honolulu Board of Water Supply officials say Dole Steet will probably remain closed in both directions between Kanewai Park and University of Hawaii Faculty Housing until sometime Friday.

At 5:45 p.m., the Board of Water Supply isolated the damaged portion of the 20-inch main and pumped water into the transmission line on either side of the break to restore water service to customers.

A spokeswoman for the board said water service was restored to all customers by midnight.

It was unknown how many customers were without water service .

The board advises motorists to avoid the area Friday as repairs continue on the main and roadway.

The main dates back to 1928.
