The Honolulu Police Department said they mistakenly reported today that the 33-year-old man who was found unconscious Saturday in a vehicle at Kaena Point had died Thursday.

HPD spokeswoman Michelle Yu said: “We regret the error and apologize for it.”

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser, and other media, reported online today that the man had died Thursday, based on HPD’s incorrect information.

At last report, the man was on life support at Tripler Army Medical Center.

On Saturday, a fisherman found the man and a 25-year-old woman in a Jeep Wrangler that was stuck in a ditch on the Mokuleia side of Kaena State Park. The Jeep was on a trail popular with offroad drivers.

The vehicle was in a ditch with its engine running, windows rolled up and muffler submerged in water. The fisherman removed both persons from the vehicle and performed CPR on the man, who had no pulse and was not breathing. Other witnesses called 911 and assisted with the woman, who was unconscious but breathing.

Authorities at the accident scene suspected the couple fell victim to carbon monoxide poisoning.

The woman is still on life-support systems, police said.
