Keala Quinlan had 15 points and 15 rebounds to power No. 2 Roosevelt over Leilehua 51-34 on Saturday night in quarterfinal-round play of the OIA Division I playoffs.
A crowd of about 150 at the Rough Riders’ gym saw Roosevelt seal a state-tournament berth. Sharice Kawakami came up with three of her four 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 14 points and five assists.
"Keala gives us a lot of energy at the post. Once one of us starts hitting, we all come together as a team," said Kawakami, a senior guard. "We had a long week of practice and we worked on staying focused."
Roosevelt (12-0) advanced to the semifinals, which will be played on Tuesday.
"We’re just taking it step by step. We want to take care of OIAs first, then states," Kawakami said.
The Rough Riders will meet Nanakuli on Jan. 10, at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium. That game will tip off at 6 p.m.
Leilehua (9-3) ousted Moanalua on Friday to reach the quarterfinals and is still alive in the hunt for one of the OIA’s six state-tournament berths. The Mules will meet Farrington, which lost to Nanakuli on Saturday, in an elimination matchup.
Jerri Maluyo, who scored 27 points against Moanalua, finished with 24 hard-earned points against Roosevelt. After she scored nine points in the first quarter, Roosevelt’s defense clamped down. Maluyo shot 2-for-5 from the field and 2-for-4 from the foul line for seven points in the next two quarters.
"She can shoot the 3, and that first dribble of hers, we were protecting as much as we could," Roosevelt coach Hinano Higa said. "Starr (Rivera), Sharice and Ashley (Kiko) did a really good job defensively on her. And Kaohi (Quinlan), too."
With Maluyo hounded most of the time, the Mules had opportunities, but couldn’t keep pace with the fast-breaking Rough Riders. Leilehua shot 11-for-42 from the field against Roosevelt’s man-to-man defense, and it wasn’t much better at the charity stripe: 6-for-18.
Roosevelt did what it could against Leilehua post Tywanna Abbott, who had 20 points and eight rebounds against Moanalua. The junior finished with two points and eight boards against Roosevelt.
"She’s an animal on the boards, so we tried to box her out and she still got rebounds," Higa said.
Maluyo shot 8-for-14 from the field, including 5-for-8 from the arc, and added four boards and four steals. Her teammates shot 3-for-28 from the field (11 percent). Other than Maluyo, no Mule scored more than three points, showing some fatigue in playing a second game in as many nights.
"We missed too many shots early, point-blank shots," Leilehua coach Elroy Dumlao said. "We missed free throws early. Turnovers."
