Kaneohe unemployment offices to close
The state’s Unemployment Insurance and Workforce Development offices at the Kaneohe Atrium Building on Kawa Street will close permanently at 4:30 p.m. June 25.
The state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations says claimants can continue to file unemployment claims online and that an unemployment claim hotline for Windward residents will be available at the Kaneohe Public Library during normal business hours.
The hotline will provide users with claim information only.
Unemployment insurance offices in Waipahu and Honolulu, and Oahu WorkLinks America Job Centers in Honolulu, Waipahu and Waianae will remain open.
The offices in Kaneohe are closing because of a reduction in federal funding, according to a DLIR spokesman. Its four employees will be reassigned to offices in Honolulu.
Sheraton Waikiki to offer 3-D light show
Sheraton Waikiki will showcase a permanent 3-D pool mapping light show, "Helumoa," starting Aug. 1 at the resort’s Helumoa Playground next to restaurant RumFire.
Two different light shows will be held each day at 8 and 9 p.m. and will be open to resort guests and the general public for viewing.
The $1.3 million, 3-D pool mapping digital storybook was created to provide guests with a contemporary way to learn about Hawaii’s culture and history.
The resort hired production company PointCloud to create two projection video light shows using its Raylight4D technology featuring a 3-D mapping system.
The light show will feature graphic figures and images projected onto the nearly 200,000-gallon pool.
The two light show stories will include "Helumoa — the Birth of Hawaii" and "Helumoa — the Legendary Story of Waikiki."
State urges food stamp use at open markets
The state Department of Human Services is urging low-income individuals and families to use their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits at farmers markets and the city’s People’s Open Markets to purchase fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables.
Beneficiaries of the food stamp program also can purchase bread and cereal, meat, fish, poultry and dairy products at open markets, as well as seeds and plants to grow their own food.
The City and County of Honolulu has four sites accepting SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer cards, including Waipahu District Park and Wahiawa District Park on Tuesdays, Ewa Beach Community Park on Fridays and the Kalihi Street parking lot at Kalakaua District Park on Saturdays.
The state’s participation in the food stamp program is at a historic high with an average of 187,062 individuals per month receiving SNAP benefits in fiscal year 2013.

UberX to test ride-sharing in Honolulu
Mobile phone application company Uber is testing its ride-sharing service in Honolulu this month.
The service, known as uberX, is priced at 40 percent lower than taxis, the company said in an email.
The San Francisco startup, which launched its taxi service in Honolulu in August, is competing with Lyft, another peer-to-peer ride-sharing service.
Through June 29 Uber will give away five rides free, up to $50 each. UberX is in the testing phase, so there may be times when availability is limited.
