San Diego mayor, Chargers owner meet to talk stadium plans

The Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers are planning a shared stadium in the Los Angeles area if both teams fail to get new stadium deals in their current hometowns. The teams announced plans for the $1.7 billion stadium in Carson in a joint statement Thursday night, Feb. 19, 2015.

LOS ANGELES » San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said after meeting with Chargers Chairman Dean Spanos that he wants the team to stay in the city for generations to come, but that he will never support a deal that the city can’t afford.

The one-hour meeting Sunday at the Padres’ Petco Park came after a surprise announcement last week that the Chargers and Oakland Raiders are planning a joint stadium in the Los Angeles area if they fail to get stadium deals in their hometowns.

Faulconer says he and Spanos discussed how they can work in good faith to find a way to keep the team in the city.

Both sides said that a mayor’s advisory group has agreed to expedite its work and present a plan to the team within three months.
