The University of Hawaii football team’s 2015 recruiting class, like most school projects, was constructed in phases.
As of today, the Warriors have 22 commitments. There will be additions — and, perhaps, substractions — by Wednesday, the first day recruits may put their pledges in writing. Here’s the construction timeline:
> Phase I: In the 1970s, Lynn Zwahlen was a receiver and Norm Chow a graduate assistant at Brigham Young. They kept in touch, with Zwahlen opening a dental practice and Chow calling offensive plays in college and the NFL before being named UH head coach.
Three years ago, Dr. Zwahlen and his son visited the Warriors’ spring training during a family vacation. Soon after, Aaron Zwahlen, a quarterback, accepted Chow’s scholarship offer. Zwahlen said his son never wavered — not after being named to ESPN’s top 300 prospects; not after receiving interest from Clemson, Boise State and Washington State; and not after going on a two-year church mission.
Aaron Zwahlen returns from his mission on May 21, and begins UH’s summer session five days later. "We’ll give him a hug, and send him on his way," Zwahlen said.
> Phase II: With a five-year contract, Chow figured he could made a long-term investment. In 2012, Chow’s first year at UH, offensive lineman Gus Lavaka committed to UH with the understanding he would join after serving a church mission. He returns this year, and will join in May.
Slotback Dylan Collie, whose two older brothers played in the NFL, and tight end/defensive end Sione Kauhi completed church missions this past fall and are enrolled at UH.
‘Iolani School lineman Kamuela Borden will sign on Wednesday, then go on a church mission later this year.
> Phase III: Last spring, USC quarterback Max Wittek was set to earn a degree in three years, then transfer without restrictions. Wittek took recruiting visits to UH, Louisville and Texas. Because of a personal situation, Wittek did not earn a degree at the end of the 2014 spring semester. He could have transferred to an FBC school and played immediately, or redshirted at an FBS school. He chose Option C: He joined UH as a walk-on last August. He counts toward this year’s recruiting class when he goes on scholarship.
Running back D.J. Riggins, and linebackers Manly Williams and Dayton Furuta committed as grayshirts last year, delaying their enrollment until this spring semester.
> Phase IV: Two of the top local prospects — offensive lineman Jordan Agasiva of Mililani High and two-time All-State safety Solomon Matautia of Campbell High — will sign with UH. The Warriors also remain in the running for one of the state’s top linemen. The Warriors are a long shot to land Saint Louis School’s Fred Ulu-Perry, who made an oral commitment to UCLA. But Ulu-Perry and UH line coach Chris Naeole have known each other for several years. Ulu-Perry also is visiting UH this weekend. And when he was younger, Ulu-Perry would play the drums at UH games alongside then-mascot Vili "The Warrior" Fehoko.
