Two-time state high school champion John Oda captured Hawaii’s final U.S. Amateur Public Links qualifying spot last Thursday. Oda fired rounds of 72-70 at Kauai Lagoons to finish at 2-under-par 142, six shots ahead of alternate Andrew Chin (77-71).
Both Public Links national championships are July 14-19, with the men playing at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas, and the women at The Home Course, in DuPont, Wash.
Also last week, ‘Iolani’s Rose Huang shot 3-under-par 69 to earn medalist honors in the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur Qualifier, at the Turtle Bay Palmer Course. Huang was one of four qualifiers in the field of 29, followed by Malia Nam, Allisen Corpuz and Alanis Sakuma, who all shot 73.
State Stroke Play champion Kyle Suppa won the only available slot at the U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier, which had 36 participants at Turtle Bay Palmer. Suppa shot rounds of 70-73 to beat first alternate Zackary Kaneshiro (71-73) by one.
The Junior Amateur national championships are July 21-26, with the girls at Forest Highlands, in Flagstaff, Ariz., and the boys at The Club at Carlton Woods, in The Woodlands, Texas.
