Jasmine Moody scored 14 points and Tanisha Elbourne added 10 as Radford outlasted Mililani 42-37 in the opening round of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championships on Tuesday.
A crowd of about 300 watched at Moanalua High School gym.
Moody added seven rebounds and four of her team’s 10 steals to lead the way. Now the Rams face No. 2 seed Lahainaluna in a 5 p.m. matchup at Moanalua.
"It’s going to be a good game," said Moody, a 6-foot-1 senior. "We haven’t seen them and they haven’t seen us."
Radford was 11-3 in OIA play, but one of those losses came against Mililani (11-2 OIA) while Trojans standout forward Shantel Appleby (11 points per game) was healthy. The junior injured her knee at practice late in the season, however. Without her, it was a 10-point swing in favor of Radford.
"I feel bad for her," Moody said. "Shantel was one of my teammates on 808 (Basketball Club) last summer. It’s sad, but it’s something we had to take advantage of."
Mililani switched out of its sagging man-to-man defense — always doubling down low on Moody and center Kennedy Johnson — to a 2-3 zone during the first half. That helped the Trojans open a 12-7 lead after Summer Bolibol scored a layup on a pass from Kristen Miguel to start the second quarter.
A few minutes later, Radford made a switch of its own from man to a 2-3 zone, fueling a 14-0 run. Mililani committed six turnovers in the second quarter.
"Our zone, we stress not being passive, but being more active," Rams coach Charles Chong said. "Nobody should have an open 3."
The smaller Trojans were much more patient in the third quarter. Reserve guard Megan Shimabukuro hit a 3-pointer and a free throw on back-to-back plays to bring Mililani within 24-20.
Radford stretched the lead to 33-26 in the fourth quarter on a drive by Moody, but Kayla Torres rained in a 3 from the right wing, and after Torres hit a corner 3 on an inbounds play, Mililani was within 35-32 with 3:30 to play.
The Trojans had a chance to tie the game, but Shimabukuro’s 3-point try spun out. A steal and layup by Jazmyn Peralta pushed Radford’s lead back to five points.
The Trojans kept coming back. Jamie Yuki scored off a steal, hitting a runner in the paint, and after Shimabukuro hit a 22-footer from the top, they were within 39-37 with 37 seconds to play.
Radford point guard Puni Seei sank two foul shots, however, and the Trojans got no closer.
Mililani coach Patrick Basilio’s squad was tough-nosed from start to finish despite the height disadvantage and the absence of Appleby. The Trojans outrebounded Radford 34-26, hustling for 16 offensive boards. Torres led the Trojans with eight points. Miguel grabbed a team-high eight caroms.
"They all did their best. I feel bad for our seniors with our team not being at full strength," Basilio said.
The Trojans also did a solid job on Moody, who took just 12 shots (making six).
"She can single-handedly beat you. Such a good player," Basilio said.
Radford finished 14-for-38 from the field (37 percent). Mililani shot 34 percent (15-for-44). Radford was 13-for-22 from the foul line (59 percent) while Mililani was 3-for-10.
"We’re doing better with turnovers and free throws," Chong added.
Mililani had 18 turnovers to Radford’s 12.
