With two first-half goals, Marlie Mandaguit supplied the needed ingredients to bring Hawaii Prep a championship for the second year in a row.
Ka Makani trailed Mid-Pacific by a goal early, but stormed back with an aggressive attack late in the first half. They then kept up the pressure the rest of the way for a 5-1 victory over the Owls in the Division II final of the Ohana Resorts/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships on Saturday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
"This is a special group," Hawaii Prep coach Stephen Perry said. "This is the deepest we’ve ever been. It’s been a four-year process and last year’s championship allowed the girls to know that it was possible again this year."
Trailing 1-0, Mandaguit tied it in the 30th minute with a quick and high 30-yard shot that took Mid-Pacific goalkeeper Monica Mack by surprise and went over her outstretched arms.
Two minutes later, a Mandaguit shot hit the post, and then two minutes after that, she struck for the second time on a set play for the go-ahead goal, making it 2-1. This time, Kaui Taylor’s throw-in went to Teah Van Bergen, who sent a pass up the middle to Mandaguit and she cranked home a shot from inside the box.
"We always seem to be one goal behind or tied," Mandaguit said about the need for a comeback. "When we went down, it opened our eyes. That was not the outcome we wanted. So we knew we had to kick it up.
"It’s amazing. There’s tears of joy and happiness all around."
That second goal seemed to take the life out of the Owls, who had kept it relatively even before that.
"When they scored that second goal, it really brought our team down," MPI coach Shailesh Mehta said. "It put us on our heels and we just never got over that fear factor. Going into the game, I was concerned about their size and their physical style of play. It wore us down."
Mehta said he was down to two subs and fatigue played a factor in the second half.
"We ran out of gas and the legs were gone."
On Friday, the Owls’ semifinal victory over Kapaa went two overtime periods and was decided on penalty kicks. It took its toll.
In the second half, HPA’s Gabbie Ewing scored on a breakaway after taking a through ball from Bri Vallente. Vallente also scored from in front on a nice touch pass from the end line by Taylor, and then Taylor got the final goal on a cross from Ewing, who had taken a pass from Ella Kotner.
Second-seeded and ILH D-II champ Mid-Pacific (7-6-2) won the D-II state title three years in a row prior to the now two-year reign by top-seeded and BIIF champion HPA (13-1).
In the 20th minute, the Owls grabbed a 1-0 lead when Kayla Watanabe settled a chip from Chandler Bass and fired a shot into the high left corner.
The Owls kept working to come back late in the second half and had a handful of misses on in-close chances.
Despite the loss, MPI’s Watanabe said, "This season has been incredible. I wouldn’t trade this team for anything else. This is the best team. Hawaii Prep was a good team. They knew what they were doing, played great defense and they had a great goalie (Taimane Kamaka)."
