Homeless men charged with stealing copper wire
Two homeless men were charged with stealing copper wire in the Nimitz Highway area.
Michael Akau, 34, and Shawn Ogasawara, 36, were charged Wednesday evening with the theft of the copper. Akau’s bail was set at $50,000, and Ogasawara’s at $15,000. Theft of copper is a class C felony with a maximum jail term of five years.
The alleged theft took place at about 11:54 p.m. on Monday.
Honolulu police said patrol officers were sent to the Nimitz area after receiving a “suspicious circumstance-type case.”
Upon arrival, officers observed two men attempting to steal copper wiring and they were arrested.
