HILO >> The national accrediting body for pharmacy schools is extending its accreditation of the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s pharmacy college.

The school said Monday the American Council for Pharmacy Education has found the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy compliant with all 30 standards it uses to evaluate schools.

The accrediting body last year said the school wasn’t compliant because it didn’t have a permanent building. The council said the lack of a permanent facility could ultimately lead to probation.

But lawmakers in May included funding for a new building in the state’s budget.

Founding Dean John Pezzuto says probation would’ve been disastrous for the college. He says it’s heartening the accreditation is again secure, but the school must remain diligent and prepare for the next steps.
