Helicopters’ transfer to create extra noise
The Army is alerting residents that there will be increased activity and noise Tuesday and Wednesday with the movement of eight AH-64E Apache helicopters from Pearl Harbor to Wheeler Army Airfield.
The eight attack helicopters and 40 soldiers belong to the 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, based at Fort Carson, Colo. The soldiers are here to participate in the biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) war games, the world’s largest international maritime exercise.
Although based in Colorado, the battalion is an organic unit within the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, and this is an opportunity for the unit to train with its parent headquarters.
Floating dock at Kawaihae almost finished
Kawaihae, Hawaii island, will likely have a new home for vessels by the end of next month.
Contractors are finishing up work on a new floating dock and parking at Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor, West Hawaii Today reported Monday.
The $4.7 million project is designed to take the strain off the West Hawaii harbor’s crowded facilities.
The 445-foot floating dock has space for 25 slips, said Kris Maile, assistant superintendent of Hawaii Dredging Construction Co.
Gravel parking areas will have room for 11 boat trailers and 15 vehicles. It will have a 40-by-60-foot concrete wash-down area with two spigots.
The project was originally slated for completion this month, but the contractor ended up doing extra work shoring up a rock embankment along the edge of the harbor.
A planned boat ramp at the dock has been delayed after coral was discovered at the proposed site.
Hostile dog harasses Maui hikers
An aggressive dog stranded a group of hikers on the Waihee Ridge Trail above Wailuku on Sunday morning until emergency crews were able to help them down, Maui police said in a news release.
Police, medics and animal control personnel responded to a call on the trail at about 9:09 a.m.
Medics treated a female hiker for a dog bite, and the hikers were escorted down the trail without further incident.
Animal control officers captured the pit bull. Police said it’s not known who owns the dog.
