Grant buys new sports gear for Waialua
The intermediate after-school program at Waialua High and Intermediate School received some much-needed sports equipment Tuesday.
The intermediate basketball, volleyball and soccer teams had been playing with hand-me-down balls from the high school teams, according to school officials. "Funding to purchase equipment for our intermediate after-school sports program is difficult to come by," said Waialua Principal Avis Nanbu.
The intermediate teams received new balls and equipment, valued at $3,000. Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui, under an initiative he started — Resources for Enrichment, Athletics, Culture and Health — presented the equipment Tuesday. The group purchased the equipment with a grant from the NFL Foundation through its Pro Bowl Community grant program.
Tsutsui founded the REACH initiative in 2013. The Lieutenant Governor’s Office says the program promotes learning during after-school hours to help students graduate and be successful.
Body found off Salt Pond Beach
Kauai lifeguards recovered a body of a man in waters off Salt Pond Beach in Eleele on Tuesday.
The identity of the man, described to be in his 30s, has yet to be released. He had no known address, but police said he camped near the beach, according to a news release by the Kauai Police Department.
At about 1 p.m. a snorkeler notified lifeguards of a body discovered about 75 yards offshore. A lifeguard recovered the body. Police said the victim was presumed dead at the scene and transported him to Wilcox Hospital, where he was formally pronounced dead. An autopsy will be conducted later this week to determine the cause of death.
Anyone with information about the man is asked to call police at 241-1711.
Wailuku sealant project to begin
The Maui Department of Public Works will be applying sealant to roadways in Wailuku Heights beginning Monday.
Slated to get underway Monday and wrap up March 27, the work will start at South Alu Road and Kuikahi Drive, moving north on South Alu Road to Kualau Street.
Residents will be notified two days before the roadway work directly affects them. They will be asked to park on the roadside outside the work zone and to stay off the resurfaced areas to allow proper curing time, Maui officials said. Residents are also asked to shut off all irrigation systems while crews work on the street.
Any questions regarding the project may be directed to Public Works’ Makawao Highways Division Office at 572-7272, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays.
